Welcome to First Grade!

Hello! Welcome to our class website! Here you will find what we have been up to in our classroom and future events.

Irving Primary school
                             * REMINDERS*

  • Please return you and your child's traced and cut-out hands on the purple construction paper on Monday!

  • Scholastic orders are due by April 27th!

 What We've Been Up To:

  • In math we have been working on measurement. We learned that you can measure objects using many different tools and practiced measuring straight lines, curvy/spiral lines, our arms/legs, and even the paths of toy cars that we raced off of a clipboard ramp.
  • During our Reading Workshop time, we learned how to be the boss of our own reading. This means we have important jobs to do as readers: 1. Stop at the first sign of trouble 2. Try something 3. Try something ELSE to get the job done 4. Check it. Do a triple check

  • In Writing Workshop we finished up our final opinion writing piece. Before beginning our next unit on Writing Reviews, we learned about Earth Day and wrote about ways that we could help save the Earth.

  • In phonics we learned about 'Bossy R's'. We learned that when the letter R comes after a vowel it changes the sound of that vowel. We practiced these r-controlled vowel sounds by learning key words for each sound. (EX: ar -car,)

  • For Science,  we learned about the Sun through videos and books. We created our own suns- writing sun facts on each ray of the sun. We will continue this unit next week learning about the Moon.

  • For Social Studies,  we've been learning about influential African Americans for Black History Month

Reminders

We have begun doing a "Star Student" of the week. Each Friday, a student will chosen as the Star Student for the next week.
Star Students are students who always try their best and work hard. They also follow directions and are kind to others.
There are many fun things Star Student get to do during the week! If your child is chosen, they will bring home a folder on Friday with papers inside explaining what they get to do each day the following week.
